Why Inman?

Out of all the men in Cold Mountain working on building that house (in the very beginning of the movie), why did Ada only go to Inman? I mean she gets of her wagon, first day in Cold Mountain, and she already inquires about him. Did they know of each other already?

reply

Apparently, Inman had a way with the ladies.

Or maybe he was hung like a horse.

I've never been a fan of Jude Law, but I must say that in an aesthetically impressive piece of cinema he is the prettiest thing in the entire movie. So there you go.

reply

Natalie Portman tho

reply

No. Inman is pointed out "in particular" by Mrs.Swanger as the one most likely to "clear" her "top field" for her at just a word from the beautiful Ada. She also says "He's been pressin' me since the day you arrived here", suggesting Inman himself wishes to be introduced to Ada.

reply

And of course, we don't know exactly what Mrs. Swanger meant when she said "clear her top field". :)

reply

She meant she wanted the top field plowed and we see Inman plowing that top field a few scenes later as Ada was passing by on a wagon with her piano. Ada then turns around and plays the piano for him as the wagon passes by.

reply

I know, dummy. I was making a joke using a double entendre. Sheesh!

reply

Ada's topfield had a bush that needed to be whacked and Inman had the right tool to do it.

Time of your life, huh, kid?

reply

I wasn't replying to you, 'tard. Sheesh back atcha!

If you weren't replying to him, then next time, don't hit the reply button on his post.

I don't think it is her first day in Cold Mountain. Sally mentions that usually he is pretty quiet but since Ada arrived he has asked about her (something along thise lines). I think why she took to him right away is that they are both very much alike.

Actually, I normally don't name-call. But people like sliceofpeach sometimes need to be called out for their extreme stupidity or else, well, they will continue to be extremely stupid! As another poster pointed out, she ruined a perfectly good discussion relating to Inman using his "tool" to "clear Ada's topfield". Dumb people should stay out of clever discussions, cuz they just won't get it.

because Inman is the hottest piece of ass in the whole county that's why

reply

Yeah, it should be pretty obvious ^^

Why is she interested in Inman? For the same reason guys are interested in Ada... because Inman is, like, super hot :D

Oh and also the woman specifically directed her to him, but if I were her, I wouldn't have needed to be pushed towards him!

Nice reference to Jude Law's other role as a southerner in 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil'.

You all crack me up!

This tread has me reaching for the book.

I really liked the flashbacks to when she first arrived and met Inman.

And yes, this tread is cracking me up as well!

In the book it's actually Inman who goes up to Sally and offers to clear her top field if she agrees to introduce him to Ada. He had been watching her at church and wanted to get to know her.

In the film it differs slightly but the idea is the same. Ada arrives at the church (it's not her first day in Cold Mountain) and Sally is the one who points Inman out to her and tells her that he's been asking about her. That's why Ada went specifically to Inamn and she asks him if there's something in particular he wanted to say to her.
