What's with all the smoking?

Not that I'm against it, but.....

Seems like everybody (except the Kirsten character) is smoking. Even Lehman's dad appears to be sneaking a smoke at the talent competition. Then, there is "John Dough"--always smoking. Don't think I ever saw a brand, so it isn't product placement.

Just strange.

I think it's just a running gag, and a funny one, too. Did you notice that when Amber rushes home after the trailer is blown up, even the firefighters are smoking?

Flat, drab passion meanders across the screen!

Missed that, but there were so many other funny things going on.

Have to agree with both of you re: why the smoking. Funny bit!

Just smoking and drinking was all they had to do in a small town. Even the cop was dipping tobacco.

Amber's secret signal to her Mom....

It's the Midwest. It wouldn't be authentic if no one smoked. Like everyone in the Midwest smoked.

It basically ties in with the trailer park/white trash theme. I'm from Kentucky, and the constant smoking is right on target. :-)

Also factor in that this was made in 1999. The portrayal of smoking on screen has been steadily decreasing over the years since then, so it probably seems more startling when seen now. (That's in addition to smoking being kind of a joke in the movie and a part of the overall landscape.)

If you made a smoking game of having a cigarette for each one we see smoked in the movie, you could be a first time smoker, still going an hour after the movie ends, and then die of lung cancer immediately
