Madonna's guest appearance.

Why does it get so much flack? It was hysterical.

She had me cracking up as Karen's very brief spaced out narcissistic roommate.

"He got murdered"

"CUT to me underneath him flat on my back on his futon."

"Or would you rather dance with an Office manager!"

"If they even show up 5 minutes late I look at my watch and then at them and they like totally get it"

I thought her acting was great. Her character was meant to be a wishy washy narcissist.

Plus she allowed Karen to say her best comeback line.

"Well you're an oddly overconfident 40 year old secretary!"

I don't know why I find that line so hilarious lol, all she did was point out the obvious. It was great.

"CUT to you living in a dumpster."

reply

The dialogue itself was hilarious, agreed. I think the general consensus is that her acting was terrible (which; debatable. I've seen better, I've seen worse).
The "cut to me" jokes were gold.

reply

But it fit the character. She was a shallow control freak lol.

"I'm an office manager for one of those companies that does collections for those hits of the 80s cds...........women of the 80s......and the 90s."

Haha totally making and joke of her true self.

At the end of the day, acting comes down to whether or not the character is believable. Sometimes, with bad actors like Britney Spears (or arguably Madonna), the audience can tell that they're acting. Good actors make the audience forget that they're watching a scripted show. Bad acting can really take the audience out of the magic.
Perhaps it was a shame she was paired with Megan Mullally, who is an amazing actress and made her look worse in comparison. She pulls off the shallow, over-the-top character without coming across as a bad actor.
I don't feel strongly either way. I think Madonna did the best she could.

It's hard to be pulled in when it's a guest spot for a very well known celebrity.

reply

True, but I was pulled in by Michael Douglas, Matt Damon etc. Even Britney pulled me in more than Madonna did lol.

I loved Madonna's guest spot and, although I always find that she looks as though she is constantly fully aware thst a camera is on her, I laughed a lot. Her self awareness added to the comedy IMO. However, i didn't 'get' the "women of the 80s, rock ballads of the 80s... The 90s" joke. Anyone care to explain why it was so funny or what the intention of the joke was? Was it a reference to Madonna specifically or a reference to 80s and 90s music generally?

reply

I always took the "Hits of the 80's. Rock Ballads of the 80's..........and the 90's" as a jab at Madonna's real life persona and her overall cultural relevance.

I mean 80s Madonna or 90s? But I loved "Ray of Light" so hence ....."and the 90's"

reply

Idk why it was bad... I thought she did a great job as well. Probably one of her best acting moments ever lol

-"we don't need men to make us happy"
-"you said it, sister"

....

-"so you want to go see if we can get laid?"
-*burps* "totally"
