Low budget, cinimatic expirience?

Yes. Easier to light with ambient sources. Also has that film noir feel to it...

****Added Later: I added a quote in the FAQ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0154506/faq) on this topic from Nolan's commentary on the DVD...***

Mainly because of the genre/style of the film. It's film-noir...which is almost always black and white. So basically, it was a stylistic choice.

Why not Black and white?

I don't get this question. was there something wrong with the black and white???

reply

Since I'm not colorblind, I personally prefer movies in color. I prefer a colored TV. In fact, I don't think they even call them that any more.

But after a while, the black and white didn't bother me.

Maybe Nolan will release a colorized version just for you :)

Artistic choice maybe but I think the primary reason was that Nolan likes shooting film, not digital and B&W film is a helluva lot cheaper.

I don't think digital was much of an option in 1998. Budgetary concerns were probably the main reason for B&W. And it suits the neo noir style.
