Should Have Been Two Movies

Finally got around to seeing Following. The thing that stood out most is that there are two premises that didn't work together, so well.

We were promised a movie about someone addicted to following people for recreation. It starts that way but then it goes into the clever burglar story. Even though that's an intriguing story, it feels almost like a bait & switch.

We should have gotten a movie that was all about the brilliant burglar and his gullible, new apprentice. Call it something other than Following. Then go back and do another movie (if Nolan can think of one) about the guy who gets in trouble by following people.

One short movie was perfect. I don't think either of these premises had enough depth in themselves to warrant a movie of their own.

The film benefits in having both a comedic hook to get the viewer engaged, as well as a deeper story beneath for when eventually "robbing houses lol" gets old.
