Why Add The Third Plan? (SPOILER)

OK, we had Nick's original plan to fake his death. Let's buy that for a moment, even though the Life Insurance wouldn't pay for murder.

The second plan, of Nick/Devereaux, to off her in the coffin didn't work.

The third plan, just turn him in to the cops... evaporates, even though straight-arrow Travis is there and needs to justify his risk in following Libby all that way and not bringing her back as ordered.

So what's with the suddenly appearing plan that Travis stated of framing Nick for Libby's murder, using the tape? Why even bring that up if it wasn't their actual plan? It only drives him to desperation and trying to kill them both in his office.

And how to actually pull it off, since Libby would never get to see her son that way?

Just one of several holes in this alleged plot.
