Good up until Penelope Cruz and the love angle

Anyone agree? Thought the film went really flat when they arrived in Mexico. Was almost like 2 different films

Disagree. It's a natural progression of the protagonist's journey. IMHO.

how far into the movie was it until she showed up, wasn't it pretty early? been a while since i've seen it

Ms. Cruz shows up at the thirty-minute mark. Soon after, John Grady Cole is struck by "uno colpo di fulmine" (a lightning bolt), to borrow an Italian phrase. That's figuratively speaking of course.

It's a love story moron. Kind of tough without the girl.
