Why did the hot chick have to die?

The scientist doctor susan... =(

It was a great subversion of the 'final girl' trope.

She was very much a decoy protagonist. The first time you see the movie, you assume she's the main character. I'm pretty sure she gets top billing, she's the only one on the cover, most of the scenes are about her or feature her, it's her project, etc etc.

But when you watch it again, you realize more clearly that Carter was the REAL main character the whole time, the film actually kicks off from his perspective first, before moving to her.

Very similar to 'Pitch Black'

"Pacific Rim: The Thinking Man's Transformers"

On the cover of the DVD version I have, she's portrayed in front of the shark, but not mentioned; in fact, it's only the leading men (Thomas Jane, Samuel L. Jackson, LL Cool J, Michael Rapaport and Stellan Skarsgard) who have their names printed on it.

A flood's not the answer, people just float.

I think it's ridiculous that the director had her character die, but had LL Cool J's character live, not that I wanted him to die, but she was the main character, and the whole reason for the trip, that is really the only problem I have with this film.

reply

I was glad she died, it was her all her fault that sh** happened in the first place! as Scoggins said "She's screwing with the sharks, and now the sharks are screwing with us..."

Saffron's dang good looking in this movie.

You misspelled anorexic skeleton....

reply

Not anorexic skeleton. She was beautiful in this movie.

If I met her in person it would go something like this :

LOL Just because someone isn't super curvy, it doesn't make them anorexic.

She is currently 6 feet tall and 135 pounds. She was most likely thinner in 1999, and with her current weight her BMI is already underweight. I cannot imagine what her BMI was back then. She was a fashion model since 15, her chances of having an eating disorder, which anorexia is one, is exceedingly high. Although some girls are naturally thin, it is more likely she has some eating disorder and the modeling industry is partially responsible for the warped view women have about their bodies. But if that's what you find hot, go ahead, I do not like bones jabbing into me while making the beast with two backs.

reply

Maybe, but she didn't look thinner than 135 in the movie.

This movie portrays sharks as abused animals, unlike other movies of the genre, where these creatures mindlessly murder innocent vacationers. So of course she had to die. The hot guy and the cook didn't participate in the scientific endeavor, so they lived.

Because heaven forbid a smart woman with a British accent be worthy of survival - it would negate the pro-Christian subtexts littered throughout.

Carter should've died, his all-action, no-one-else-can-do-what-I-can heroics were annoying.

reply

I thought the same thing.

But her death was also the most awesome so it equals it out.
