How did this go wrong?

Great writers - Clement & La Frenais
Great Actors (with one or two exceptions such as Billy Connolly and Zoe Ball)

How did this end up such a turkey?

It held out great promise, yet ended up as a poorman's Spinal Tap.

It's not "sci-fi", it's SF!

Not every good movie becomes a hit film at the cinema. Dogma and Princess Bride are two films which bombed at the cinema and both were excellent films.

As for bad performances? I thought Billy Connolly was perfect in his role. You probably just don't like Billy C and Zoe Ball (who was essentially playing herself--how can anyone possibly fail at portraying themselves?)

You are only limited by your own imagination.

It was worth it for the Bruce Robinson coup de theatre.

Marlon, Claudia and Dimby the cats 1989-2005, 2007 and 2010.

It's not the box office that I'm arguing with. It's probably that I had too high expectations for this.

"You probably just don't like Billy C"

I put him in the same bracket as John Cleese. Stopped being funny at least twenty years ago.

this is my favourite movie of all times. i'm extremely satisfied with it. i think it's very underrated

It didn't go wrong, that's how. I think of it more as Spinal Tap for grown-ups.

reply

It didn't. It's a great film.

And "poor man's Spinal Tap"

Bad News predate Spinal Tap, and are much funnier.
