annoyingly unrealistic for these reasons

1. The teacher. No way could a teacher talk to the students like the black teacher talked to his students. He would be fired.

2. The detention. No way would a teacher calmly take pot away from a teenager and set it on his desk and no way would a teenager just hand it to him. The police or security would be called and the kid would be suspended.

3. The flashing scene. Would a girl really go to such lengths to get her boyfriend out of detention?

4. The party. No way could a bunch of kids bust into somebody's house like that without the police getting called.

5. Heath Ledger. He was supposed to be made out to be kind of tough. However, as the movie played out, he kept getting nicer and nicer. He also associated with the "nerds." No way. Judd Nelson played it true on The Breakfast Club. That is how a tough guy is. Also, in school, the nerds do not have the guts to talk to the tougher guys as the two did in this movie. The groups stay with their own groups.

6. The model. How many kids in high school land modeling jobs? Never happened in my school. We all worked at McDonald's.

7. The french lessons. A language is hard to learn and and the guy did not know it. However, he learned it quick enough to teach it. Nope.

8. Other than these things, it was okay. I have seen worse movies, but come on.

"Duh. You're the idiot. Not me."

I had modeling jobs in high school. My contract was $85 an hour or $1000/day and that was in the 90's.

You mean to tell me 'young people' today don't even understand the purpose of movies?

1 & 2- In 6th grade a friend talked back to a teacher repeatedly; the teacher jumped out of his seat and chased down the student tossing desks on his way. He caught the student, slammed him into the lockers and choked him. We all served detention with the teacher during our recess and after school. Nothing else came of it. There were visible red marks on my friends neck afterward, this was in 2000.

Do you think teen models don't exist or? Who do you think they put in Target and Abercrombie ads? Dwarves?

reply

One thing. It's a film.

For the life of me, what's your problem? It's a movie, it's not meant to be realistic in any kind of way. If I want realistic I don't watch movies, or I'll watch documentaries. Completely pointless criticism.

Some of these I agree with- I actually found it a bit disturbing the flirtation between teachers (including the principal) and kids.
But other than that, this film feels a bit fairy tailish to me, which makes me feel you need to suspend your disbelief a bit.

There are some slightly annoying bits, and some of the characters are not very likeable, but I love it.

I would say tho, Verona is meant to come across as a tough guy initially, but I think part of the point of the film is to show that we shouldn't take on stereotypes at face value.
He's actually a lovely guy underneath, and mixes with anyone. He doesn't segregate.

In my rather small high school, about a 1000 students, there were two active models and one former. In the 90's.

Wow, for someone who took their time to list 8 things they dislike about a movie, that sure proves something doesn't it?
