Obviously a good bit of acting because I found her so genuinely foul that I couldn't really bear to sit through the film because of it.
Nice voice work from Horrocks. She did genuinely sound like the singers she was imitating.

Mari was a horror, yet there are women just like her. I am from a town in Yorkshire UK and there were two disreputable pubs in the town center frequented by Mari types who left their children to drag themselves up while they went out drinking and picking up men every night, and I mean EVERY night. Everything about her was spot on, the trashy clothing, the lacquered hair, the cigarettes, the yelling, the mouldy food in the fridge. Brenda Blethyn was spot on.
shareYes. Just watched it again last night. Blethyn does just about make the movie insufferable. The fact that she gets her comeuppance at the end by both Ray Say and LV makes the in-between endurable.
I think part of what makes it nigh insufferable is the fact that her character is so believable. There really are people like that out there.
I found it impossible to hate her completely. She was an abusive parent, for sure, but she was also sad and deeply flawed. Human, and so well-played by Brenda.
