It always seemed to me that they settled--primarily Laura. Ultimately nothing changed when she decided to go back--she even said she wanted to come back because she didn't have the energy to do anything else. She didn't go back because he had truly changed or because either of them did anything to improve their situation and then he seemed to go back to what he was doing before as soon as they reconciled.
Granted, at the very tail end he seemed to have learned something and I assume we are to believe that they will make it after all. But that does not change the fact that she went back to him because she was just familiar and comfortable in that situation even if she wasn't happy. Additionally, she was grieving and that obviously had a hand in it too. Sadly, I have been through all of this myself! Kind of sad and pathetic in a way but it does happen.
I think that's one of the reasons I like this movie so much, because it was a more realistic portrayal of how people behave in relationships and skips the unrealistic fluffy b.s. Clearly not everyone does this but I think this movie represents more closely how people are than the typical romantic comedy.
