How much of this comes from 'Tomb Raider' canon?

I've never played a 'Tomb Raider' game nor read any of the various other 'TR' media [Comic books, novels etc.]. All I know is this film [I still haven't seen the second one yet, I just saw this one again for the first time since it's home video release].

I was wondering how many of the elements in the film came from the established canon from other 'TR' media and how much was invented for the film?

Did Lara have a fussy man servant and a quirky gadget guru? Was she a wealthy British aristocrat? Did she have a relationship with an American archeologist? Did she like sh***y dance music ?

And for those who are into the games, is it worth going back and playing the original PS1 era games? I'm a retro gaming fan, but my interest is within the Atari VCS - NES and golden age of arcade era.

Thanks

Yes the original Tomb Raider games are still worth playing today. They were well designed games and made you feel like you were really on an expedition to find artifacts or treasure in old ruins.

as far as story and characters, the movies are way different than the games. yes Lara has a butler but in the games he's the typical old man and isn't a character in the games but only around during the tutorial levels.

her "gadet guru" is brand new but i always took him as the movie version of the player. since he's the one sorta watching her and supplying her with the gadgets and such.

so really the only thing the games have in common with the movies is Lara herself, her job and that her father died years ago. although his death in the games in completely different. hell they changed his backstory again when Tomb Raider made its little comeback to Xbox 360.

but the games are totally worth revisiting, sure the graphics haven't aged well (especially part 1) but as far as gameplay, the 5 original PS1 games are all pretty fun.

something funny about Lara's movie love interests, they were Daniel Craig in the first movie and Gerard Butler in the 2nd movie. two actors who weren't really known much or at all at the time but have both become quite famous since.

Almost nothing of the movie is based on the games. This was a different aproach.
In the games Lara is a Lady who is also a Tomb Raider. We dont' know much about her family and she has only an old butler.
in the comic books she is a lady who lost both her parents and her boyfriend in a plane crush her butler is evil and she kills him and hires a female assistant.
in the new games (2006 and after) the character has been changed in order to follow the films bio and she has two side kicks one like Bryce a gadget guy, the old butler and a friend who could pose like Hilary.

only in the comic books does Lara have a "life" in the video games we don't see her having boyfriends as it is only Lara in the field.

Nowdays It is hard for me to play the old games especially after having played the amazing legend and underworld. But I do still some times play them for fun. Althought it seems to dificult now after PS3 to get back on my PC... lol

hope it was helpful

None of it unfortunately, instead of taking some of the plotlines from the games (the first one was a corker involving Atlantis and an ancient super race) they came up with this drivel. At least we have Angelina in it!

The Tomb Raider canon is poorly definied.
