Fan of the book

I read this book for English class senior year in high school, and I loved it. I enjoyed reading it because I knew it was a true, personal story and it was completely depressing subject matter yet Frank McCourt had this sort of humorous way of telling it. I haven't read the followup, because I had no idea it existed. I plan on reading it though.

My question is: Does the movie do the same thing as the book? Does the movie tell this depressing story and keep some sort of light in it. Is it all depressing, or will anyone feel a little warmth during it?

I read the book two, and I think the movie does an excellent job of conveying all of the thoughts and emotion that the book does so very well.

I saw the film before reading both books, and I found them all moving and humorous. Though through reading the books, you get a much better take on the characters.

I agree. The book is downright nasty (about the filth they lived in and how dirty everything was) and they cleansed the film to better portray the actors, IMO. I wanted to see more of the poverty in Ireland that they left in the kids POV. Also more about the Father.. Poor MUM!
The book made me cry -Big time. The movie left me wanting something "else" for this family.
