Inappropriate for High School Studetns?

I am wondering your opinions on the appropriateness of showing this movie in an Senior English class in high school. We watched about half of it until the principle said that it was inappropriate. The principle said that teh scenes with the masturbation and the many nude scenes were too much. DO you agree? I think our class handled it fine and the principle overreated. Just to let you know this is a private catholic school.

American? i am not going to spurn some tirade of abuse, but your teacher sounds like a prude not ready to see the realities of life.

I remember as a yr 11 student "Once Were Warriors" (one of the best films i have ever actually seen) was shown just for a bit of a cultural boost if you will.
If your teacher cannot handle seeing a guy masturbate, nor can they deal with the 'rude' bits then they are a f!@#ing child. The mere notion that nudity, and just the bare naked body should be considered an insult is just mind blowing, and i think this guy needs a solid injection of culture, stat.

They say the average child has seen 50,000 people die on screen before they are 15, yet they cannot hack showing them a natural, naked being.

Just ridiculous.

Your teacher sounds as if he forgets he's not dealing with ten-year-olds but a class of people who are practically adults. Treating you like children is patronising and you're quite right to be offended. If your teacher bothered to watch the film instead of judging it on a handful of scenes, he'd see it raised many important issues.

Actually the teacher who is a woman was fine with us seeing it and thought we would get something out of watching it. But through the principle (who is also a woman)overhearing a student talking about it in a legitimate tone, she tossed the movie out.

Your teacher is probably more worried about angry parents than anything else. Teachers have to be careful these days. You never know what will make a parent sue or go psycho and get you fired.

i ask you in all honesty, do you know what it means to be a human being? life isn't all happiness and rainbows, you know.

I could imagine that the class kids will respect the teacher for not sensoring such relatively harmless content. 99% of High School males are professional masturbators anyway (the other 1% lies about it) so it can easily be recognised as a perfectly normal part of adolescence.

pfft, i'm 12 and i saw it during the summer. it's alright, even though my mom made me look away during nude scenes and whatnot.

Your Principal is probabally concerned about the reaction that some conservative idiot parent might have about their child being exposed to something completely natural. If you got parental consent to show the film, I would think it would ok for High Schoolers to view.

reply

I don't think it's inappropriate for a senior english class, they do understand the concepts of sex/nudity/etc from maybe a sex ed class or what not. But I do agree with many people here who state the thing with the parents, teachers gotta be careful of what they show or else the kids and parents may go nuts. ha

Why is this class watching this movie anyway?

If they haven't read the book (and in the UK this is a regular 'set book' for 15-16 yr olds) then it's pointless. AA is highly regarded not just for the story it tells but for the way its written - the narrative devices, the dialogue and language etc. The film is ok but all it ultimately does is promote the book - like the Harry Potter stuff, it is essential to read the book first.

If the book HAS been read, then the tone of the film's content should be obvious. So why was it shown in the first place if Mrs Morality is inclined to pull the plug on that sort of thing anyway?

The teacher should have known that the book - and film - is critical of the church. The Catholic church is not noted for tolerating dissent and criticism anyway. AA would inevitably cause a shytstorm result in a parochial school...

Schools have a right to say what they don't want shown in school. Agree or not, it's their right.
