shareBluto is the original nemisis of Popeye in the comic strip and original Fleischer Brothers and Famous Studios cartoons. When King Features took over distributorship of Popeye cartoons they mistakenly thought Paramount, who owned Famous Studios, had the copyright on Bluto, and so renamed him Brutus. They are the same character. When Hanna-Barbera took over the Popeye franchise the name was changed back to Bluto. One explanation of the origin of Bluto/Brutus was he was one of Olive's boyfriends in college before she met Popeye.

Bluto is the original villain in Popeye. He appears in the comics and in the earliest cartoons and EVEN the live action movie with Robin Williams. Brutus only appears in the 1960's cartoons and in the early 80's video game "Popeye". I always thought they were 2 different characters, but I'm learning that it was a stupid name change that happened by mistake. Oh well.
