100m cut is worse than theatrical

Ok, I have not seen the 7 different versions, or each version from every county in Europe, or whatever is available.

I have seen 1)a DVD from a college library, and 2)the 100 minute version on Netflix.

The Netflix version is excruciatingly worse than the DVD copy I saw several years ago. Quick list of problems:
1) At least 12 minutes longer. Slows the pace to crawl.
2) Way too much pontificating from the overacting villain, a lot of that was not in the first cut I saw.
3) Added horrible gay double entendres. "You want to be in me?" And they threw that into Connor's mini-speech thru Duncan at the end. What the crap? Really stupid. If I'm going to kill the man who murdered my mom and daughter over several hundred years, I'm not going to make a gay joke and a bad callback to "Call me" in the span of 30 seconds. Makes a potentially epic moment very campy. Also, they screwed with the Duncan/Connor face melt somehow. Made it look worse and mean less in the moment.
4) Kate lives?!?!?!? Dafuq? Kell was a monster who killed Kate in the first cut I saw. The ending with Duncan alone on the mountaintop was very moving. Why do a 180 and add a stupid reunion/make-out scene and explain it as "Kell made his choice."? His choice? What choice? To completely undo his entire character MO, for a happy ending? Beyond horrible.

The 100 minute cut was boring, very poorly paced and edited. Made the actors appear to give worse performances and talk too much. Added crappy dialog, thematically inconsistent conversations, ruined the ending, emasculated the villain for the sake of a good ending and betrayed the whole point of the movie!
If revenge doesn't grant redemption, why does killing Kell get your wife back?
Ugh so bad.

The worst part is I recommended to some friends that we watch the Netflix version unaware it was not the decent movie I saw years ago. Made me look dumb. Jerks.

the version on Netflix is the Producer's Cut which was released on DVD in the US in 2001. the DVD you got from the library could have been the Theatrical Cut or perhaps the Rough Cut.

1.)only thing i liked that was added was the opening that has Connor and Duncan coming out of the subway. i felt that that should have been put in somewhere in the film but not necessarily the very beginning. in the Theatrical Cut they only show a few seconds of that scene as a quick flashback which adds some mystery but didnt really payoff later on.

i felt the Theatrical Cut was just too short at being only like 88 minutes.it seemd too quick in the pacing without ever lingering or going more into depth with the characters. the Producer's Cut of course doesnt really add anything to remedy that but i guess for those that feel the movie was too short, at least this makes it a little longer.

2.)yea Bruce Payne was a bit over the top there. i mean i enjoy seeing him taunting people but it could have been done in a more serious way. i felt that the character was interesting because he wasnt crazy or wild like what we have seen before, but more of just driven by anger and supposedly being someone who didnt care for the rules of The Game. that itself is what makes the guy threatening. but the hammy dialogue ruins much of that.

3.)the line is 'DONT YOU WANT TO BE INSIDE ME!'
i honestly never took that the wrong way when watching it in theaters. because the thing about immortals is that once you behead them you get their live essence and so part of them goes inside you. so the line made sense.
but as i got older i of course realized that it can come off as sexual. still doesnt bother me though but yes they certainly could have come up with a better line than that.

they removed a lot of the CG with Lambert in place of Paul. which is one thing i liked about the theatrical cut because its quick enough to where i dont see it as looking terrible. i think trying to edit it out looks much worse. i would have very much preferred the version of that scene where they actually have Lambert in his coat standing beside Adrian Paul. seeing them both hold their swords up just looks far more badass.

4.)yea they threw in that 'happy ending' cause i think the film got a lot of flack for being too depressing. they should have used the ending that has Duncan leaving the Christmas Tree in place of Connor. that at least had some symbolism to it.

the choice...well i interpreted that in that he left her alive for himself since shes a woman and he pretty much owned her. it makes the taunt with the necklace at Duncan seem like a bluff. i think thats effective because it shows that Kell is just toying with Duncan's emotions to throw him off balance. makes him seem meaner in a sense.

for me the Theatrical Version was my favorite because well its what i saw in theaters and while i was very dissapointed with the film not being much like the trailer, it was still very exciting seeing it that first time. i managed to get that cut on disc and i watch it every now and again.

on DVD i prefer the Rough Cut which has a lot of alternate and extended scenes that certainly make a lot more sense than what the Producer's Cut brought. the opening intro and the order of scenes is much different. so if you havent seen that one i would recommend it. its certainly worth the watch in that its got many differences the other 2.

I didn't know there was two versions. I saw the one with the happy ending which I liked a good deal. The whole movie is so bleak and depressing. I don't think the bad guy would have killed the girl anyhow cause he was so hell bent on one day possessing her heart. This is a guy who's all about ultimate games and obtaining the unobtainable. He wouldn't dust that broad. Besides, she's a necessary piece in the forever manipulation of Duncan. The only thing better than killing her to torment the bastard is making him think you did so you could do it all over again.

theres 4 versions possibly even more.

the movie is depressing and grim. but thats what Highlander is all about. the tragedy.

Kell killed her because he wanted her Quickening. it makes sense either way. but i feel that it makes him seem meaner in that hes bluffing just to throw Duncan off balance.of course Kate wasnt that great of a love interest,so having her just be dead works in the theme of losing people. if it were Amanda , then yea it'd be far more dramatic.

The Netflix version is the only "finished" version that was released on home video in the US. I'd like to have the theatrical version, but I think it's only available on Region 2 DVD. I'd like to have it, but my region free DVD player (an old Apex) went caput a few years back. With Blu Ray, I no longer have a need for a region free DVD player, as I have been able to replace many of my region specific DVDs with region free Blu Rays. I'm not going to invest in another region free DVD player just for this crappy movie. But, I agree that the theatrical version was the better version of the movie.

PS. Does anyone know where to view HiDef versions of the original trailers? The second trailer, that gave Lambert top billing over Paul, was freakin awesome! It made this look like such a great movie. None of the trailers were released on the US DVD....
