watching it fully for the first time in years

I haven't seen the whole film since I had it on VHS as a kid, but I've caught bits and pieces on TV a few times.

10 minutes in and I can't believe how poorly shot and acted it is, Lambert is literally putting no effort in at all.

UPDATE:

I can't figure out how to update my post with the IMDb app.

This is definitely the worse out of Highlander 1-4. I haven't seen The Source.

yea it was not the best shot film. you had a first time director who i think previously was only a second unit director in a few films. so not exactly my top choice for a Highlander director. but im sure he was very cheap to get.
had they gotten say Russel Mulcahy or Dennis Berry to direct. then it would have been shot more like an action-adventure film.

to me it very much felt like i was watching a two part episode of the tv series on the big screen. though it would have been nice if they rounded up the series cast. then have Christopher Lambert interact with those characters. to me that would have been worthwhile and satisfying.

Lambert i think was preoccupied at the time with multiple projects.
so its no surprise that hes not exactly giving it his all. but his portrayal of the character was of a darker tone. i think thats what kinda had it go south for me.

wont lie though, from 1999 to 2001 i was kinda obsessed with the film. watched the various cuts of it practically every day. had every line of dialogue memorized. it was the only DVD of Highlander i had at the time. once i got the tv series seasons on DVD, it made Endgame seem really cheap.

having watched it in recent times…yea its quite bad. but its nowhere near as bad as The Source.
The Source is so bad its depressing. granted the first 15 minutes intrigue me, but after that its just a sad mess.

I watched this film a lot as a kid too. I watched the first film religiously on VHS, I've had it on DVD and in January I bought the Blu-ray, it looks absolutely stunning on Blu-ray very colourful looking.

I have a soft spot for the 3rd film because I grew up with that on VHS also. Highlander 2 the Renegade Cut isn't bad and the 2004 update of the special effects make it look extremely modern, the 2 fight scenes against Michael Ironside are bad because Ironside is slow and the sword looks super heavy to swing.

I haven't seen the show but I did watch the pilot episode with Lambert guest starring a few years back on Youtube.

I've had a unique idea for a Highlander sequel for many years now, the characters wont be from Scotland so I don't think I should use the title Highlander. Because MacLeod was mortal and able to have children at the end of the first film I'm not sure if I should include him as a supporting character or just have a spin-off with only new characters.

UPDATE: IMDb posted my message twice by mistake and when I deleted the copy it stays there saying deleted, I wonder why IMDb admins have never fixed that.

yea the first film i watched a lot during the 90s. the VHS, the first DVD, the immortal edition DVD, the Optimum bluray release with special features & better audio track.

the third film is one that i like simply because it was the closest there was to seeing Connor MacLeod in the 90s. have the VHS along with the 2 US DVD releases and the Sorcerer DVD. it was the last Highlander film that had that cinematic feel to it.

Highlander 2 was one of those i had seen once on VHS when it was a new release. then saw it every so often on tv. eventually i got the Renegade Version on VHS from the official Highlander store in the late 90s. then got the DVD that was basically the laserdisc ported over. then got that special edition 2disc DVD. overall i think i like it simply because its a very different look and vibe from the rest of the franchise. i like that Connor is in a long black coat. has the long hair and is closer in humor to how he was in the original. whereas in the later films hes much more serious.

Endgame for me is simply a fun time just because it features both Connor & Duncan in the flashbacks. that was one thing i wished was on the tv series, because it would have felt more complete having Connor shown more in the role of Duncan's mentor.

my idea for a tv series follow up. was to have some of the things from The Source but in episodic format. to have it in tone and similar in story to the tv series JEREMIAH. where its after a virus outbreak that killed all the people over the age of innocence. so basically anyone over 18 died. so its years later and all the surviving children are now adults.
it would be nice to have that setting and a road movie of sorts, be put into a Highlander show. where instead of Jeremiah, u have Duncan MacLeod. can throw in immortals in there cause obviously a virus wouldnt affect them. so youd have ur sword fights peppered in every so often.
to me that works because the writers of the tv series always wanted to have Highlander set in a post apocalyptic world. so to me this would work in providing that.

yea it stays there just to show that something used to be there. so thats normal. never quite liked that, but i guess if ur reading a convo and theres posts missing, the reader wont be confused.

The thing that bugs me about Blu-ray is 1 audio will be loud for action and the other is loud for dialogue i wish they'd merge the 2 together.

Highlander 3 would be a lot better if it wasn't PG-13.

You should write it, it sounds interesting.

I'm not quite sure what to do with the whole Gathering thing, if there comes a time when only 2 remain then how many was there to begin with and it doesn't make sense when immortals are constantly being born.

The creator of Highlander said in the special features that the film is different to his original screenplay, but I wonder why he didn't try to explain the mythology more.

reply

guess it depends on the equipment you use. i never had problems with audio on any bluray.

the Highlander3 editions i have are R-rated.

yea i have a lot of ideas i could put to the page, but i guess it just isnt the same, with Highlander not really being around anymore like it was in the 90s.

well pre-immortals existing was just to expand the story further and have a big franchise. but in the original film there were only a handful of immortals that were around by the time of the Gathering.
so i suppose when youve done all the stories you could possibly do, you pick your best characters and have those be the only remaining ones when The Gathering comes along.

yea he had a much darker more dramatic story laid out. the reason it was changed up and toned down was to put it to film. the producers wanted something that was more for the screen. they added humor and gave a certain atmosphere to it.
after that first film, he was kinda done with Highlander. i dont think he had any involvement with anything that came after.

It's the multiple audios they put on the Blu-rays, I always find that the so called HD Master one is the quietest and the Dolby Digital is the loudest it's odd.

Which title do you like better for Highlander 3 Final Dimension or The Sorcerer?

these are the differences between the versions

I'd rather see a Highlander sequel than a remake, Hollywood sure are obsessed with remakes and if they remade Highlander it would be PG-13 and probably starring one of these pretty boys who can't act and are only cast for teenage girls to drool over.

the DTS HD Master tracks to me sound better than Dolby Digital TrueHD tracks. could vary based on AV receiver.
ive always found Dolby Digital audio to sound clunky and not a very clear mix.

i personally prefer The Sorcerer cut. it has a slightly different feel to it because the music is all different. seems a little more MTV style.

yea id still prefer a sequel or more specifically a true sequel that follows the original and the tv series. where they can pick up where the first film left off but add some new scenes that show that Connor MacLeod didnt win The Prize, but instead just defeated his greatest advesary. kinda like a Back to the Future II , in where u can maybe try to recreate the look and feel of the first movie and do a sort of recap with some newly created scenes. from there just pick up with what the tv series introduced. wether it be all in flashback or simply take places in the 80s or early 90s.

yea hollywood today has no talent. they dont know how to construct a story the way the original film had. they just dont have the vision.especially if their first step is to hire a newcomer or first time director. along with seeking out the writers & producers that just happen to be trendy at the time. and not cause they have a great story laid out.

Lambert has a good memory, usually when I've seen actors discussing their older films they can't remember any of the famous scenes haha.

yea in all the Highlander related interviews hes done in the past 20 years, hes had a good recollection of how things were. on the Lambert Q&A disc, he was very descriptive of how the original interview for the Connor MacLeod audition went. how he was signed when Bill & Peter didnt even realize that he didnt speak a word of english. and yea he has a good memory of a lot of the things that went on. though it doesnt surprise me, because his thing , was that he was always into making movies. he loved pretending and being different characters. that Connor MacLeod was his favorite, because hes never had a character quite like that one, that had a lot of depth and growth.

Fortress is a great film but the sequel was crap.

I'm a huge film fan and IMDb annoys me because lots of underrated films don't even have a 6 star rating, Fortress was still in the 5's last time I checked. A lot of people won't watch a film if it's below a 6 and this is how films remain under the radar because people don't give them a chance.
