Was the red paint symbolic of anything in particular?

Was the red paint symbolic of anything in particular or was it emphasizing the extra level of crazy this lady was experiencing? Saw the movie and still never figured it out.

according to ancient myths the color red is supposed to ward off demonic spirits.

...OR maybe it was a call back to a certain telekinetic girl who had pigs blood dumped on her at her prom.

What does a bean mean?

On the audio commentary the director said that the the shot where the paint falls on one of the two small statues is symbolic of the original. You'll notice that the paint falls on the blond one, the Virgin Mary representing Carrie, and the dark haired one, Saint Anne representing Rachel. :)
