James Berardinelli was wrong in his review for the original Carrie, and he was wrong in his review for this stylish sequel as well! This is a great sequel to a terrific classic and actually ties a lot of loose ends up in the original as well (he ran away with a woman mama) among other things. Emily Bergl is a very underappreciated actress she shines in this movie, as does Amy Irving reprising her role from the original.
Overall this is a rare sequel that makes a nice companion piece to its predecessor and stands on its own as well.
totally. its time that people admit that the rage is a very underrated and underappreciated film. it also should be noted that both stephen king and sissy spacek expressed their love for this film, as well as original carrie director brian depalma
This wasn't a typical horror film about some girl who gets her feelings hurt and knocks off the entire student body. There's much more beneath the surface than that.
I get where the director and writer were going with this picture. If they had more time and the director was Katt Shea from the beginning I think the movie would have been even better. The movie is written with intelligence and the performances are true to life. They did a good job of tying the details together the best they could.
It's a shame critics couldn't have been more open minded about the movie. That is if any of them watched it at all. It's a little horror film gem.
Honestly, I have to say I like The Rage better than the original just because I can relate to and like the character of Rachel more than Carrie. I wanted things to work out for her.
Damn... didn't you want Jesse to save her.
I wish that had been an alternate ending on the DVD rather than that strange snake scene.
Oh Yes, I wanted Jesse to save her, I was even more sad about that ending, than the Original Carrie. I like both Movies, and I have to say, that they did a fantastic job with this Sequel. With a few Cuts here and there, this would be one of the best Remakes ever. And as a Guy I have to say, Emily is a very attractive Woman (Sissy too..back then :-)
could not agree more!! first saw it in theaters back in 99 and thought it was intense and awesome. i was surprised to find that fans of the original were displeased because it keeps the spirit of it alive and adds more to it. its a great film that has unfortunately become a lost rare diamond.
I have to say I like The Rage better than the original
parisa, you are not alone...im one of the few who also thinks this is better than part 1 i think so because the ending was better and the characters were more accurately portrayed. Also, Mark Bing was a better villain than Chris and far more sadistic. i also love the twist that Rachel shared a father with Carrie, making them half sisters. Also its more realistic that Rachel would deny her powers rather than accept them like Carrie.
my only complaint is that Sue Snell died. i figured it would happen by it still took me by surprise.
im one of the few who has the script for this film as well

In my humble opinion, The Rage" does a good job of respecting the film from which it stems and the Carrie fans. It even brings back the lone survivor of the original, Sue Snell (Amy Irving), 23 years later, as a school counselor who had spent time in a mental institution to recover from the original tragedy. Tie-ins are a must for true sequels.
This sequel/update hit all the marks for me.
Even the plot is pretty current. Teens filming a private sexual encounter for all to see. This type of harassment was actually in the United States news. A Rutgers student committed suicide after having his private moments exposed via video by his roommate.
Ricky_may1, happen to have any quotes from King on this subject? He pissed and moaned about how it was unnecessary and a stupid idea in an interview for a book about his films called "Creepshows." Spacek liked it and consented for her scenes to be featured; never heard DePalma's feelings about it.
Not that I'm personally knocking the movie -- in its own rite, it's an exceptionally well-made film. The problem is that it basically IS a remake. Different characters, same basic plot. If it had simply been titled "The Rage" and had no direct connection with the 1976 film, it probably would've fared better than it did. Despite that, it was a modest hit and a top rental for a while... but it's kinda been forgotten about in the years since (again, being overshadowed by the DePalma film).
i see and respect your points, and thank you for not criticizing my like of the film like others would have done or have done for that matter; to each his own i always say; my opinion of the film has not changed; i still think its one of the most underrated films there is, maybe not the classic the original was, but still as you said an exceptionally well made film.
As to the other point, it wasnt originally to be a sequel to Carrie; it started off as a film titled "The Curse" and if it had been that it probably would have fared better, but the executives figured they could make more money if they passed it off as a sequel to Carrie, so they changed the name rewrote a few things and the result was "The Rage: Carrie 2" Still a great film, despite its flaws. No quotes from King, but it doesnt surprise me he would hate this film; most writers dont like sequels to their work (most i said, not all).
I love this movie! I've always thought it was incredibly underrated. Everyone's pretty damn good in this, in particular Bergl who was extremely effective in her role. I seriously don't get how anybody could not enjoy this one.
No, it's not. It's one of the worst horror sequels ever Emily Bergl was absolutely terrible, and her character was loathesome. As for Amy Irving, she just phoned it in
