Was the videotaping of Jesse and Rachel making love really about Rachel

Was the videotaping of Jesse and Rachel making love really about revenge against Rachel or was Mark really getting back at Jesse for disrespecting him and his group.

Recall by the time Mark comes up with his videotaping plan, we have already learned that Eric will not be charged with anything so what's the point. The point is Mark is still mad at his best friend... plus Tracy's comments about how Jesse is flaunting his relationship with Rachel in public only fuel Mark to teach Jesse a lesson about respect(Watch the lunchroom scene with Monica, Mark, Brad and Tracy)

Also ...watch the scene of Mark and Eric on the balcony before Rachel arrives at the party. With no statutory rape looming over his head Eric gloats about how the college scout loved his killer instinct. Mark is not remotely interested anymore. His focus is now on breaking up Jesse/Rachel. Getting Jesse where it hurts.... humiliating Rachel and putting his former friend in his place. IMHO Rachel is a casualty of the prank not the focus of it.

By showing this recording at the party, Mark and his friends knew full well they were socially ostracizing Jesse. They could never be friends after this act of betrayal.

Again... IMHO The videotaping was more about Jesse than Rachel.

I'd say it was a bit of both. He felt disrespected by Jesse and was pissed off at Rachel. He wanted to hurt them both.

Money isn't the root of all evil. Love of money is.

Good analysis of the videotape.

Good analysis.

Now that you mention it, I do think Mark was really more focused on socially ostracizing Jesse than embarrassing Rachel, although he really did ostracize Rachel really bad in the process.

Though perhaps unintended the one friend after Jesse went off with the scout checks him out. I do believe there were homosexual undertones to this film even if others don't see it. I think there was jealousy involved also.

I'm several years late to the discussion so doubt anyone would read this, but I'd like to give my interpretations - part of their plan was that Jesse would re-unite with Tracy. In their heads, Jesse was one of them - Tracy just needed to remind him what he was missing and, as they would see it, snap him out of Rachel's spell. So when he arrived at the party, having just rekindled things with Tracy, he'd actively join in with the taunting, thus making Rachel's situation infinitely worse. Tracy in particular was convinced that she would win him back before the party, but even if she didn't:

Plan B - as has been pointed out on other threads about this film, Jesse wasn't confrontational, so to save face in front of everyone when he saw the video, they figured he would have at least been passive, and more likely he'd have claimed to have only done it as part of the game etc.

What happened instead - Plan C - still had the desired effect - whether they really got back together or not didn't matter, as long as they were seen, by Rachel in particular, to arrive at the party together. Timing it so that it happened after the "big reaveal" and while the video was being shown would have made Rachel think the worst and Jesse would not have had chance to explain until long after the damage was done...

Alternatively, they may have just not thought the consequences through (as teenagers tend not to) and not even considered the fact that Jesse, or their friendship with Jesse, might end up being collateral damage to this prank.

Either way, I think this was done purely to get at Rachel and not Jesse.

OK, having watched it again recently, the plan was utterly ridiculous - it relied on the girl in glasses (Monica?) chancing upon Rachel being harassed in the beauty store AND the scout from Kings wanting to speak to Jesse after the game.
Unless the only plan was to show the tape at the party regardless of how they ended up there....but Tracy sabotaging Jesse's car and being the only person around to give him a lift had clearly been planned, and this could only have happened if he spoke to the scout.
Incidentally, was anyone else hoping they'd lose the game? Having seen what vile people they are (apart from Jesse) I found it impossible to root for them.

Ehh I wouldn't say she chanced into meeting her. More than likely she probably stalked her around waiting for a chance to run into her and she made the most of it. Couldn't ask for a better time for her to waltz in, save her, build her trust up, and use it as a way to get in with her. That girl sold the lie really well too.. her and her other girlfriend really made Rachel seem in the group especially with the car ride to the party. Couldn't ask for a better job of selling anything.

As for the scout that was destined to happen as he was a top star of that area.. there were probably several schools wanting him they just happened to be there that day. That was def a pure fluke though of lucky timing for them to do their car sabotage.

I agree overall that I can see it being their goal to bring Jesse and Tracy back together.. the latter lacked a grip on reality though by that point she was flat out mental as Wayne Campbell would say. Jesse was 100% into Rachel and nothing was gonna change that by that point; their souls connected and they were intimate. They were as good as married by that point; nothing frigid Tracy could do to change it. I do also agree too they were probably gonna humilate him by the end.. he stood up to the main dude with that scuffle in the locker room earlier in the movie so they knew he was turning against them. It woulda been a "either dump her or you're gonna go down too," choice but I see Jesse going with Rachel no matter what.

As much as I love the climax and how it went part of me wishes they had included him there like they wanted to do. It woulda made their final moment together a little more powerful especially if he had fought back vs those guys to get to Rachel again instead of wondering up on it all after it happened.

you're right, watching it again you can see Monica hovering outside the store even before the assistant approaches Rachel, suggesting that she had been following her round the mall waiting for the opportunity.
That behaviour and is on the level of Steven King bullies, but hey, this is the sequel to Carrie
