Ancient world religion called a cult?

Yes, and thank you for pointing this out. I think that is a subtlety of the film. Another example of the monumental arrogance of the spiritually bankrupt way of life that Ruth's family considers "normal", and which they are so anxious that Ruth return to.

No, thank you. I understand now.

Following spiritual leaders and making them rich enough to travel around in Rolls Royces is indicative of a cult.

They (being all religions) are ALL cults.

A simple BASIC study of religion, and "what makes a cult" will show you that. Some cults just go a little farther in their attempt to keep the adherents. Others are not as strict, instead being considered more arrogant, that SURELY their skills at brainwashing could never be broken by such innocuous events as a visit from parents.

Xstainity is certainly in this category, up to a point.. then they start getting scary and attempt to isolate followers by using scripture that says xstains should not associate with nonxstains.

However, the fact that all religions are cults is an EASY make.

This was one of the things that peeved me about this flick. It was apparent that, though not "religious", Keitel's character was easily some species of xstain. His misogynistic view of women and belief in the superiority of men was a dead give away.

Being the rationalist that I am, I wanted to see Kate, finally freed from the cult of one religion, point out Keitel's belief in yet another cult and then create some SERIOUS ANTI-cult dialog. Unfortunately, it went the way of a semi-snuff film, injected with dark, dark humor.

I think it was more a cult that was within the religion. Pretty much every religion has a group within it that could easily be called a cult. Even Christianity. I don't think that they were calling that whole religion a cult. At least I hope that they weren't.

All organized religions are cults to some degree. Some are good; some are bad.

inform yourself about bagwhan... oh yes this is a cult and a dangerous one too. There are diffrent ways of living and there is no such thing as nomality, but you have to think for yourself to some degree otherwise your lifestyle can and will be rightfully called a cult.
