Help - what happened? SPOILERS

PJ and Ruth engage in ever-weirder sex and foreplay, and you see further just how morally bankrupt Ruth's family and friends are. The relationship between PJ and Ruth turns violent at just the time Ruth's friends realize the two of them have become sexual. There is a powerful image of Ruth walking away from PJ, who by now is laying in the sand, dehydrated, wearing a dress and lipstick, and having visions of Ruth as a Hindu goddess. I thought the movie would end there. But then there is Ruth riding with her friends through the desert, with the battered and bloodied PJ in the back of the truck. They are talking about how awful PJ is, and Ruth asks them to stop the car -- and she gets out and climbs in the back to cradle PJ. And I was worried the movie would end there. But then the movie goes to one year later. Ruth and her mother are in India, working at an NGO, and seem happy. Ruth writes PJ about her life. PJ responds -- he's back with Carol and they have had twins. You get the impression he's no longer in the anti-cult business. They both acknowledge that something happened between them that has made them... real, maybe?
