Disappointing

I was surprised that the film didn't explore the issues it was supposedly about: the nature of existence, the truth and value of the religious experience - these things were mentioned in passing, and treated very shallowly. Of course, it was a comedy, maybe that's why. But knowing that this is a Jane Campion film made it doubly disappointing. It's a very intriguing premise and the two lead actors are superb, but surrounding them was just silliness and clowning. It could've been so much better, what a lost opportunity. "The Piano" and "An Angel at My Table" had more profound things to say about why we're here.
