NOT FUNNY

Baby, this movie is a terrible let down to those of us who waited patiently while Broken Lizard found a distributor. If you're like me and you kept reading posts and internet chatter that billed it as super-funny ; be warned - it is NOT funny at all. I believe that the cats from BL planted their own good reviews of the films via the Internet to drum up support for it.You can now buy it at Wal*Mart and Best Buy, but save your money. It really is only mildly amusing. It's like listening to an eight grader tell a joke you already heard - you stand there and intently listen with a painted on plastic smile and then you make yourself smirk or chuckle so you don't hurt the kid's feelings.

Trust me - if thought Club Dread was lame, then you will definitely think Puddlecruiser is lame too...

I disagree.

I think you're just looking too hard for the next Super Troopers. That's why a lot of people didn't like Club Dread, and, I guess you didn't like Puddle Cruiser. I thought they were all great, but maybe Broken Lizard set themselves up too high with Super Troopers coming out first

Obviously this movie is terrible, it was their first film. Even though it is bad, you can tell that it has potential, and there are some pretty funny moments in this. The two main problems I found with this movie is that Steve Lemme, although good in both Troop and Dread, didn't know how to act in this movie and was a terrible choice for lead man, delivering lines poorly and most of the time not showing any emotion. Take the Lemme of today and put him in that role and the movie would be ten times better. All the other characters were pretty funny, especially Freaky. The scenes with the dialogue taking place through the mail slots was pretty funny. The second problem is that most of the scenes took too long. Jay definately learned, as evidence in Troop and Dread, that in comedies, scenes have to be a whole lot quicker to keep the pace up at comedic moments. Puddle Cruiser moved too slow, failed to establish a plot line that was followable, and failed to steer the audience in any direction, leaving the viewer lost, confused, and most of all, not laughing. This is what I propose...since this is a good idea for a movie, have them rewrite and reshoot a new movie. However, they may be a bit too old currently to pull it off. Either way, despite the slow beginnings of a great comedic group, I can't wait until another Broken Lizard film comes out. Long Live Freaky!!!!!!

I am going to have to say that you are wrong about this movie. While Super Troopers is a funny movie, it is just a collection of sketches. It looks really flashy, but there is little to it. It was intended to be a fast moving movie with little plot and a lot of short sketches. But Puddle Cruiser, while the quality is poor, is a much more intricate movie. It plays like the independent movie it is, I would compare it to Clerks or Bottle Rocket. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you only get comedy if someone slams it into your face. This movie was much more witty and understated than Super Troopers, which is why a lot of ST fans won't like it.

Jimmy - where were the jokes, bro'? What funny lines can you steal and quote to your friends? There ain't none... And believe me - I really wanted it to be funny.

reply

Jimmy the mod, don't get me wrong, I love Broken Lizard and I wanted this movie to be funny in the worst way, but there is a plain and simple fact to this movie...they had no clue what they were doing when they made it. Poor casting (the rugby player boyfriend sucked, the fat friend who did the stand up was flippin terrible, even the main girl seemed to be a community college actress drop-out, and Lemme was horrid as the lead guy) and a 'slower than a special olympic marathon' plot line created a crap movie with moments (few and far between) of comedy. This is not to say that I need a movie to slam me in the face with comedy, I just need a movie to actually BE funny. If you are comparing this movie to clerks, whose witty and sarcastic dialogue created the comedy of the movie, then you are as delerious as Freaky because Puddle Cruiser provided none of this. And if you found this movie as funny as you claim, then obviously you need a movie to be boring, long winded, and the opposite of funny. Again, this is not to say that I didn't want the movie to be funny, I really gave it an effort, but my biggest problem was with Lemme, who wasn't funny accidentally. His monotone delivery and his cluelessness on how to deliver a punchline was a polar opposite of both Dread and Troopers. The rest of the broken lizard crew were funny and even hilarious at times, but even they couldn't save this train wreck. And this is not to say that PC didn't have potential. There were lines in this movie that could have been hilarious, but were delivered wrong, and this has to do with the pace of certain scenes, which is why I suggested that the movie needed a quicker pace. Comedy is hard to do and the timing needs to be perfect. And although this movie was complete crap, they obviously learned from their mistakes and got significantly better with their second film, Troop.

reply

You would compare this to Bottle Rocket? Yikes.

This movie was painful to watch. Absolutely painful. The only funny part was when Freaky Reaky first appeared. Other than that it was preposterous. In a bad way.

i whole heartedly agree. i bought super troopers the day after i rented it and have since seen it countless times. club dread grew on me after seeing it in the theater and has since become one of my favorite (on oft quoted movies). i bought puddle cruisers without ever seeing it. in fact i ordered it before it was even available. what a HUGE LET DOWN. i realize it was their first film but they should have just kept the copy for themselves to look back on the "good old days" when they were first getting started. the only thing i can figure is they wanted to make a couple bucks after they developed such a huge fan base- and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. i just hope it doesn't come back to bite them. because, if i saw puddle cruisers first i'm afraid i would never give the next two movies a shot and i would have lost out on some BRILLIANT comedy. i am a huge BL fan and can't wait until the "drinking game" movie comes out!

reply

How can you expect thismovie to be the next super troopers?..... it came out 6 YEARS BEFORE super troopers

reply

I see all of you people saying how funny a movie this is and that we (those who think it is the load of crap that it is) don't appreciate comedy or some other remark. The fact is this...the movie is crap, not because I can't appreciate comedy or I expected it to be like Super Troopers (well, I did expect it to be like Super Troopers....in that I expected it to be funny). I think that you guys believe that you are true fans of broken lizard and are convincing yourselves that this was a great movie. How sad...how can you all lie to yourselves. Don't get me wrong, I wanted to like this movie, they were just new to the game and perfected it by the time they made super troopers. Hell, I am pretty confident that the first attempt at a film for Speilberg was bad (I am not talking about Duel, but perhaps a film school film or something). You are all delusional, this movie was a dissappointment and flat out terrible.

reply

I am actually watching this movie as I am typing this post. This movie is slow and not funny. I dont see why people are actually defending this movie its not like Broken Lizard is a good comedy group. Its like you people are putting them on a shelf with Monty Python are something. This movie is crap and so was Club Dread

reply

i think a lot of people are just expecting another super troopers. they're all funny movies.

reply

Did you guys watch the whole movie? The first half hour was balls, I suggested we turn it off. But the last half is much, much better. The main plot isn't that funny or interesting, but Farva and Fosters' story is hillarious. Rabbit's character Freaky is pretty good too. Also, like Super Troopers it helps if you're high when watching it.

There's a few ways to look at this movie. I chose to look at it for what it is: a decent enough film with some really bad acting. For those of you who say that this movie wasn't funny, just watch the scenes with Heffernen and Soter, follow Jay's humor, and laugh out loud at Freaky.

Now, that being said, most of the acting in the movie was terrible. Clerks terrible. Clerks is a better movie, but only because the writing is different and Kevin Smith was quite a bit better of a writer when he made his first film.

The last scene in the movie was, though, absolutely hilarious. Duuuuude.

The movie had its ups and downs, but the courtroom parody of A Few Good Men was absolutely hilarious!

reply

I thought it was funny if you look past the acting and the slow pace. Glad they kept making movies.

Let me put it this way..

IMO Ranking of Broken Lizard Movies:

Best Movie: Super Troopers

Worst Movie: Puddle Cruiser

In Between: Club Dread

reply

This movie was funnier than I expected it to be, not as funny as super troopers but much better than club dread

reply

Well if you have seen any of Speilbergs student films. they are a heck of alot better than his more recent attempts. the one about Phineas Gage really blew away A.I. but anyway... I haven't seen this movie yet... and can't decide whether or not to do so

reply

i thought club dread was a little lame...but this movie made me laugh my ass off....does not deserve 5.4 rating.
