Why did Il Duce not recognize his boys at the shootout?

Ok, he had been in jail for 25 years but wouldn't he have stayed in contact with his kids?

It's pretty well said that he had abandoned them when they were little kids. So they didn't know who he was.

If he hadn't seen them since they were little kids he wouldn't know what they looked like.

I kind of assumed that if he was told he had to shoot 2 guys of a certain age that were doing the same kind of things he used to do in the same city that he would connect the dots.

I am pretty sure he killed good people. Not bad people.

Dude was in jail hadn't seen them since they were little. He only recognized them when he heard the family prayer
