Original Version!

Okay cats, guy from Ontario here, trying to revisit the most frightening thing I've ever seen.

In 1997 I saw the original, half-hour version of this film and it remains the scariest, most memorable thing I've ever seen on a screen. I just watched this and was surprised to find there were a lot of extraneous plot points and a different ending from the thing that froze me in terror on a snow day at 2:00 pm 15 years ago. I would love to find the original version of this. I can't think of anything I'm more obsessed with doing than watching it. Does anyone have any clue as to what it would be titled or how I would go about searching for it? Hand to god, I will pay 50 bucks for anyone who somehow has a copy of that.

Does anyone else know what I'm talking about?

Hi, do you remember the name of theoriginal, I just can't remember

Me either, I just found the second version today after searching for years. If anyone finds out anything more, please let me know!

Thats not the original that this was based off. The orginal aired in 1990, filmed in 1989(I think), but I don't remember it having a name. I watched it in 90' on TV and it didn't have a name back then. They just aired it as "breaking news". It was quite genius and very similar to this version with the same "experts" trying to decipher whether it was real or fake.

More time was put into finding the family in the original if I remember correctly. It made quite the impression on me. I was 15 at the time and told my Dad about it and he just shrugged it off like, "its obviously fake", but I was like, "No dad it was REAL!!"

I think you are talking about the film UFO Abduction aka The McPherson Tape.

I'm really curious to figure out what version i actually saw of this..

I have to agree with you, OP, this was one of the most memorable things
i ever watched, as a kid.

It's all a bit of a blur to me now, but i remember the family having a party,
the bit out in the woods when they spot the spaceship, and are trying
to not be seen, and then one of the aliens suddenly snaps it's head around
directly in their direction, and of course i remember the end when
the guy walks into a room, and the door swings closed and there's an alien
standing behind it.

I'd love to revisit this thing!

You probably saw UPN's version which I believe was 45 minutes. It had more interviews and only shows clips of the full film. That's the one that ends with the kid and the alien. In the full film, that moment happens during the middle of the story.

The original is called The McPherson Tape (1989). And it can be seen on Shudder (without commercials) or on Pluto TV (with commercials). It can also be purchased from the director Dean Alioto's website.
