The main thing about this series, besides the wierd costumes, was the gawd-awful pronunciation of the Arabic terms...Fay-die-kin" ??? among others..I thought i was watching some kind of Limey Rock and Roll Flic from the 60's, or Austin Powers.....

Is that an Arabic word? I recognized several Arabic words, like Mahdi and jihad.
shareIs which an Arabic word? Feyd Akin? There are lots of Arabic terms in this book, and the first movie got them more or less correct, but the later film was just not right. This surprised me as that film did get "Ma::di" right with the Hamsa or Glottal Stop, but the rest of the pronunciation needed some lessons from "Saiid Berlitz"!!

Yes, Feyd Akin was the one I was asking about. I was watching part of the show last night and heard Mapes use some Arabic after the assassination attempt in Paul's bedroom.
shareIts been a long while since I've read the books but there are many Arabic words and Islamic principles that are borrowed mostly for the Fremen.
They call the worm Shaitan, Jessica says something along the lines of "It was Ramadan and April on Bela Tegeuse...", the blue eyes are referred to as "eyes of ibad". Of course there are words like "jihad" and they even refer to a religion as "Zensunni" which was a blend of Islam and Zen Buddhism. And don't mention the Mahdi, the Islamic Messiah (the return of Jesus). Pretty interesting.

The saga takes place thousands of years in the future, and on planets nowhere near Earth. Why would word pronunciations be exactly the same?
