Infinitely better than the 1984 'movie'.
I've just finished the book, I watched both the movie and the mini series and while both were disappointing the movie didn't hold a flame next to the mini series.

shareI liked the 80's version of Dune but surprisingly the mini-series did a better job of bringing the book to life. It touched on more of the important issues in Dune that the 1984 watered-down version neglected, like the horror of what Paul was about to unleash upon the universe as a by-product of his thirst for revenge. I also really liked the casting choices better than the 80's version but I think there are a lot of people that would disagree with me on that score.
shareThe score sucked, and as far as keeping truer, that it didn't either, just like the 1984 movie. It added frivolous, trendy stuff for contemporary pop culture to digest.

I like the Lynch film more. The "CHILDREN OF DUNE" mini-series is better than this one, too. This is still good, though.

I'm not a big Herbert's fan and I haven't read the book. Saw 1984 movie long ago and it disappointed me so much that I didn't want to even hear about Dune for years. Found out about the new miniseries yesterday, just finished watching it. And I have to say - it was a WAY superior to the old movie. Good casting, good CGI, more importantly - properly explained story (for someone who hasn't read the book).
shareFor all his flaws, Lynchs' Dune was a visually striking movie. I just saw this mini-series and though I was not bored the word I would describe it is "tame". At least the Lynch movie had some ass-kicking moments, here they do the story right but at every corner you see the restrictions they had with the cast, the special effects and so on.
I wish they had made it ten years later, with the big budget of something like "lost".
I agree about the budget and special effects. It was especially obvious in the desert - a pile of sand that actors are stomping on + CGI background.
Still I'm ready to forgive all those smaller flaws for the proper story. There's no sense in watching the movie if you don't understand what it's about (of course, unless you're watching smth for pure visual pleasure and try not to think about the horrible excuse for a plot, like "Thor" or "Transformers" or "Gravity").
I just did the same thing. Read the book, and then watched a fan edit of the movie. I haven't seen the original cut. The fan edit was good. The acting was over the top though. Actually Kyle M. as Paul did the most understated and impressive acting.
I'm getting ready to watch the mini series.
The 1984 movie is better in almost every way than this mini series.
