Question For Veterans

Once the Americans had control of the German sub and were discussing their options, I noticed something that I still can't figure out. The Commander, COB and the intel guy all had their sidearms on them. They are all officers so I understand. Why did the sonar operator/german speaking guy have a sidearm on him? I'm sure he was enlisted right?

Normally Naval crews are not armed. Not even Officers carry sidearms.

But did you just completely forget that they had just gone through an unusual operation in capturing a Sub from the Germans?

I joined the Navy to see the world, only to discover the world is 2/3 water!
