Spoiler Alert - Logic of the Ending?

I'm puzzled by the ending. Why did the American crew scuttle U-571 so far from land? Although the sub was out of torpedoes and couldn't dive again without repairs, it was still more or less seaworthy and could have got the crew safely closer to shore. Instead, they all pile into one inflatable raft in the middle of the ocean and hope to be rescued by friendly forces. Did I miss some important piece of dialogue explaining why?

Yes and no.
No you did not miss some important piece explaining why they scuttled the sub.

Because they DIDN'T scuttle the sub.

But you apparently did completely miss the fact that the sub was severely damaged and totally hulled by the deck gun of the Destroyer and they could no longer keep it afloat.
Even though they killed the destroyer, the destroyer mortally wounded the sub. It was sinking. They had no choice but to take to the raft. They did not scuttle the sub.

I joined the Navy to see the world, only to discover the world is 2/3 water!
