I have just seen it for the third time. It is well worth it if you love movies. The scope of referential information is enough to make your head spin! The self-referential nature is enough to keep the story line going and it helps that it is so damn funny!!! There are so many films with half the heart this film has that are called "cinema", I just hope these guys can keep making movies. Thats all.
I own the original DVD and recently bought the 2 disc Special Edition (even though you hate Special Editions!!!). Watched it again, along with BOTH versions with commentary and I have to say, it's extremely enlightening--loved it! The 2 disc version is definitely a must have.
BTW, I thought "Cafe Fantastique" was excellent--why hasn't that been picked up yet?
I really hope there's going to be a Free Enterprise 2 coming out soonish. The banter between Mark and Robert, as well as many of the other characters such as Dan and Sean, is just amazing... it flows so well and is so believable!
This is easily one of my favorite movies of all time... thanks for making it!
I recently sold something on eBay and it was purchased by the owner of the Illiad bookstore. I asked him about the shooting of Free Enterprise and he had some great things to say, even though it was a marathon session lasting very early into the morning. :) Funny how everyone associated with FE seems to have enjoyed it so much!
RMB, may I congratulate you (and your co-creator Mark Altman as well) and thank you for some of the biggest laughs I had in a long time watching a movie! I've only just discovered this. Being a trekker since my early teenage days (almost as long as Trek exists...) I sooo loved all those classic trek references and quotes casually strewn into the script! "you are not of the body"... hilarious... The "KHAN!!!" screams... My sister and I used to do a similar thing... All those references in the credits: Yonada (the bookstore, not the planet), Laurence van Gelder (not related to Simon van Gelder)... the list goes on and on... And thank the deities Shatner agreed to do this. Seems to me this was one vital step toward Denny Crane for him...
I will indeed watch this movie again and again and again...
RMB, I love this movie!! In my eyes, your film does for Star Trek what Mallrats did for Comic books. I have yet to aquire it on DVD (I'll be ordering it after I receive the other films I ordered) but my copy taped off the space channel, will have to be upgraded really soon, I absolutley adore this movie. Anyways, keep up the good work, keep persuing your dreams, and live long and prosper. From one trekkie (Newly born Trekkie) to another, you are doing a bang-up job.
I'm not a Trekky - saw maybe 3 of the movies, maybe a dozen of the original TV series, but still enjoyed the references -- it's part of our culture now. I agree it needs to be viewed several times to appreciate the level of writing. So there really is an Iliad Bookstore, and we might bump into Captain Kirk there?
