The TV version just played on THIS (a WGAL-NBC digital cable channel) in the Harrisburg PA area. I was anxious to see it again, having only viewed it the one time when it originally aired. I remember I wasn't too impressed then, and it remains so today. The original theatrical version with Walter Matthau is still superior.
I liked Vincent D'Onofrio as the chief bad guy, and Walberg was OK as the punk bad guy... about equal to Shaw and Elizondo in the original. In fact, from the bad guy POV, and the tunnel sequences, the TV version as OK overall. The problem I thought was with the good guys.
As good as E J Olmos is, the personality of Matthau in the original made the film come alive. The whole essence of the personalities, and the humor, on the city side of the original was outstanding and helped round out the film considerably.
As much as I like Lorraine Bracco, her role was totally inconsequential and unnecessary. There was no such character in the original, and certainly added nothing to the remake.
I look forward to seeing the 2009 remake with Denzel Washington and John Travolta for comparison, but that '74 version is darn near perfect. And worth a viewing if for nothing other than David Shire's riveting intro and closing themes.

Way down deep I'm very superficial.
