Why did he get fired?

He mentions that he has anger issues and drinks too much, but can that really be the reason? I mean, if they were so determined for him to remain silent, couldn't they just have given him another job at the same company? What pisses him off is that he gets fired.

And seriously, if they are using $600 million on lawyers a year, letting him keep his job shouldn't be a big deal.

So, what did he do, that made it so important to fire him?

reply

I guess they fired him for insubordination. They mention in the film that they thought Wigand would take the severance rather than fight it. It was alot of money

believe he was against the companies plan to add the chemical coumadin to the cigarettes. which basically topped off his, already dislike of big tobaccos unethical ways. he states in the film his main reason for taking the position was because of the money.

my guess is he simply disagreed with corporate. therefore he was terminated. B@Ws reason for being fired was "poor communication skills" (also stated in the film)

big tobacco is like the mob. your either in or your out

reply

Yes, but wouldn't it benefit the company a lot more to keep him on the payroll, but to transfer him to somewhere less conspicuous?

reply

i agree.. but big tobacco is still the largest civil litigation suit/settlement in U.S. history (and their still doing just fine). money is no object

with the death toll associated with cigarettes, it was inevitable that someone high up in the industry would blow the whistle. and when it comes down to it, wigand didnt give much information that the public wasnt already aware of.

I think his initial explanation to Berman was a ruse, since he wasn't yet sure he could trust him. The true explanation was giving in the interview with Mike. The "poor communication skills" was a true irony since he was a great communicator and won teacher of the year, etc.

For who would bear the whips and scorns of Hollywood... (;-p)
