While you are 100 percent right about teenagers flocking to anything MTV produces (I was a teen when the movie came out so I am putting myself in that category of brainless individuals), the truth is that I am not sure they could create any kind of storyline.
The whole point of the original was that the kids were playing under a dictator and were subservient to a town that ran their lives...By the time the movie ended, the guys had broken away from all of the rules and decided to just play for themselves.
With Lance seemingly the new coach, he was not a hardass and would not treat the future players live slaves. Hence, there would be no oppression that needed to be overcome.
