Why is the dialogue so mean spirited?

After 20 minutes when the crocodile researcher calls the sheriff fat unprovoked I had to turn it off. Why is everyone so mean to each other for no reason? Dialogue like this could work in one of those nonstop gag comedy movies but this movie so far looks like it wants to be a thriller. This reminds me of the way movies are written today which I hate.

LAKE PLACIS WAS AHEAD OF IT'S TIME.

It makes a mistake a lot of movies like this are guilty of. These kind of genre-throwback creature features from this period.
It keeps trying to be snarky instead of scary. And given it's the late '90s when this came out and it's rated R, they probably wanted to punch up the crassness to seem edgier.
And look, you can have humor in a monster movie. Jaws, Jurassic Park, Tremors, and even another 1999 release Deep Blue Sea all have comedic moments.
But if you waste too much time trying to be snarky instead of build suspense, then the movie winds up not being scary. And if the humor sucks then we as the audience have nothing to latch onto.

Sounds like you need to be watching stuff like Barney.
