Why is everything filmed in British Columbia?

I swear it never fails, any movie set in a rural setting is almost always shot in British Columbia. The worst was for that awful AVP2 atrocity. It was set in Gunnison, Colorado which looks nothing like the forests of British Columbia.

Because it`s cheaper to film in Canada than it is in the US I`m pretty sure. Tons of city shots in movies are filmed in Hamilton, Ontario as well.

Simple economics.

Low costs and tax rebates.

Its that man again!!

There has to be cheaper areas in the US to film. It didn't always used to be this way.

Because BC is beautiful. It even says it on our license plates :)

reply

I can't argue with that.

proably tax reasons

Because the conifer forests and abundant waterways of the US and Canadian Pacific Northwest are "good enough" surrogates for other areas with the same, or similar, scenic attributes. Plus as others have said, filming, economic, tax advantages. Also if a Hollywood-based film company is concerned, then filming in Oregon or Washington/northern Idaho is much closer to home than the East Coast. Sure, the PNW is NOT the same as New England, but if filmed respectfully and with an East Coast aesthetic/ambience, then again, the filming locations become "good enough" substitutes. Many are suprised that the New England Coast featured in The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming! was really a tiny cove in California ... and it worked out in a way much more than merely "good enough".

No it didn't. The geography of the Northern California coast was obvious and incongruous as a stand-in for a Nantucket-like island.

Pretty much any time someone asks "Why is everything..." or "Why does everyone...", the answer is money.

Some US states are giving tax incentives so movies are made in America.

X files again money issues

Because your progressive, bleeding heart, fight for the little guy Hollywood types don't have to pay union scale on productions filmed outside of the US.

A very late reply, but related to the subject...

I live in Victoria BC in Canada. Last October for our Halloween movie month we watched a movie on Amazon called The Girl in the Photographs. We wanted to watch it because it's set in Spearfish, SD... a place we stayed at during our previous summer's road trip. We wanted to see if we could recognize any landmarks.

Within the first minute, we realized that it had been filmed in our very own city of Victoria. By and large the movie didn't give away it's faux location thanks to careful editing, but in a few scenes the many tall Pacific fir trees we have here were a clear giveaway that the movie wasn't actually taking place in the real Spearfish.
...
A few days later we decided to watch another horror movie called The Boy. We had no idea where it was set, but almost the first scene establishes the primary setting as a large stately home which is actually a tourist attraction here in Victoria.

I'm a graduate of Charle's Xavier's Mutant Academy. Those XMen/ Deadpool movies were filmed at Hatley Castle in the nearby city of Colwood. It's actually more a large chateau which served as a military academy for about three decades. I graduated as an officer there in the 1980s. My 10-year-old nephew didn't believe I went there til I showed him my graduation picture that can be found in the museum in the basement of the castle.

It has been featured in lots of other movies too such as The Changeling, Knight Moves, etc.

Chesapeake Shores is filmed further north in and around Parksville, BC. It's supposed to be set in New England. I watched a few episodes and the Rocky Mountains of the mainland are periodically seen in the background... despite the fact that it's supposed to take place in New England afaik. The cast stay at a resort in which we are part owners. I've met a couple of them, including Treat Williams.
