Erase head

This black and white harsh grainy, gloomy feel makes me remember "Erasehead" very much. The only difference is the frenzied editing and absence of factory noise in the background. I am sure that the director was inspired much by Lynch's masterpiece.

The film is "Eraserhead" and its one of my fav's. So this film is like Eraserhead?

reply

in a way yes
it's high contrast black and white
but it is much Faster than Eraserhead, more about the writing than the directing (i'd say), on the contrary to lynch's Eraserhead
its psychological thriller, while Eraserhead is not thrilling in the sameway

anyway, you'll love it.
both films are on my top 5 or something

Why So Serious?

reply

Just like "Erasehead" in the atmosphere and photography, but it's more subtle and pretentious. As one stated here : Da Vinci code meets Number 23. Nobody can make films like Lynch does, so don't raise your expecations MrMorals.

reply

pi predates both of those movies.. so i fail to see the connection.

"some movie quote"

reply

They're really not all that similar. However, I've heard this comparison many times...never understood it, though...

"Laura Harring looks like Samuel L. Jackson." - Franzkabuki

reply

I second that -- the only similarity between Pi and Eraserhead is that both are black-and-white.

Main difference between the two: Pi had a story.

yeah, i hate how overdefensive people are on IMDB

of course this film is like eraserhead, and if you asked arnofsky i'm sure he wouldn't be on here like a prick, vehemently trying to deny any connection

people need to grow up and realize that when someone compares something, they aren't "attacking" your precious movie

reply

Hahahaha, yes, Pi had a story. I just seen the movie and during the film i was thinking of the similarities with Lynch's Eraserhead. Especially in the scene where he is in the metro and he finds a brain at the bottom of the stairs. Those creepy sounds where totally Lynchean.

reply

I failed to find it.
Didn't watch the other one yet, though.

Ok firstly, Pi didn't predate Eraserhead. Pi was late 90s, Eraserhead was 76. Secondly, Eraserhead had a "story", it just wasn't a conventional narrative like in most films. Thirdly, I thought there was a resemblence. Ignoring the fact that they were both black and white (which to me doesn't stand as a a resemblence anyway because Eraserhead used far more binary oppositions than Pi, and had a far different style.), they each told the story of one protagonist gradually losing his mind. In Pi, the character of Max was very much isolated from the world he was in - just like Henry. They each had some sense of social acceptence; the relationship between Max and his friend, along with Henry and his girlfriends' affairs, but still they both appear to be missing something. The use of background noise to represent the state of minds of the two characters' has already been mentioned, but even the set, props and locations seem very similar in a dystopian, post-modern sense. Both men have some sort of physical attachment to their female neighbours, and the sustained tension is amplified gradually throughout both films. Although the narratives are very different, and Eraserhead has a far more surreal feel to it, I can see why people would make the distinction between the two. I can see the comparison with Tetsuo too.

As soon as "Pi" started, I immediately thought of "Eraserhead", it has that cold feel and a grainy cinematography to it. Since Lynche's "Eraserhead" is one of my favorites, I loved "Pi" also.

reply

Eraserhead didn't have narration to explain what the fich was going on.

TETSUO: the mathematic man

reply

I definitely agree that the two films are similar in certain ways. The use of irritating/loud sounds to accentuate the character's situation is probably one of the more noticeable similarities. (Apart from them both being black/white)

reply

At least PI was watchable and I found the character's dilemma/ambition curious.

I was disappointed with the drugs/drill because I went there already with Cronenberg's Videodrome and eXistenZ.

Also - I only endured about 30 minutes of Eraserhead.
