I think the message is much more simple.
The message is simply all "gifts" come with a price. Like the idea of the "tortured writer". So many that have a gift are tortured because of it. Many writers, or artists, that have given the world masterpieces lived mentally and emotionally trying lives. We, as a society, are better off for their contributions, but paid for that contribution. Many with their lives at early ages. I believe had the question been posed to many of these geniuses if they would give up their gift for inner peace many would. We'd (depicted as the Jews or stock market people in the film) be worse off, but they, as idividuals, would be able to lead happier, more "normal" lives. Just my $0.02.
