Was the black and white film playing in the background when Rexroth dies the first motion picture ever? I've heard that the first motion picture ever was of a train, and that when it came at the audience people leapt out of their seats.

No, it wasn't the Lumiere movie. I'm pretty sure it's a clip from Renoir's La Bete Humaine, whose plot Intolerable Cruelty loosely mirrors.

If you think that Intolerable Cruelty has the single slightest thing in common with La Bête Humaine, then I suggest you watch it again. Or even better, read the book.
