Annulled?

George Clooney is a successful divorce attorney. Why didn't he think to just have their marriage annulled? He would know that. He marries her at night, then the next morning she says she's divorcing him and taking all his money. You don't need a pre-nup, he could get it annulled. Couples get marriages annulled after much longer periods of time and for less severe reasons!

reply

they consummated it didnt they?
can't annul it then.
bummer, eh.

reply

don't be daft, just cos they consumated the marriage doesn't mean they don't have grounds for an annulment. there can be several reasons - and that asside he cound have very easily divorced her without paying her anything. he's supposed to be the best divorce attourney so divorce her on the same grounds as he divorced the first marriage (the rexroth one). that he was deceived etc, that whole fake wedding would be enough to prove she planned the whole thing.

reply

Does consummation really mean anything anymore? Is America that religious?

reply

That´s not question of religion (I´m from a post-communistic country, and we had this rule in communist times too. But surely they could get the marriage annuled, only without the prenup the richer partner shall be robbed. Depends on his-her attorney

Okay but this movie gives us the impression that a prenup is only worth the paper its written on. And I could go around ripping up peoples prenups.

This is a valid criticism, and a definite plot-hole. You can't just marry someone and announce less then 12 hours later that you are divorcing them and expect to get any settlement. The judge would throw out the suit so fast and so far you wouldn't even hear it land. If it were possible you would have Vegas showgirls leading drunken millionaires into all-night wedding chapels every other day. You can read about the grounds for annulment at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annulment. The grounds for annulment in this case would be "If the consent to the marriage was based on fraud or force"; if someone demands a divorce the day after the wedding it is obvious the original vows were fraudulent. It could also be "Either spouse was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the marriage"; it has been a while since I saw the movie but I seem to recollect Clooney was drunk. A similar situation was in the news a few years ago. A russian stripper married one of her frequent customers only to walk out on him the next day. She told him that she only married him to stay in the country. He had it annulled almost immediately and I imagine that she is now shaking her booty in Upper Siberia.

Great post berecci, great post. Why didn't Clooney's character think of that?
No, I mean why didn't the WRITERS think of that! Miles (Clooney) was meant to be the best after all.

reply

They couldn't do the same as the first marriage because she lost out on that due to the testimony of that Baron guy. There was no one to testify against her this time.

reply

Sure, sure, but then what kind of movie would we have? :)

Why is this a topic-when they end
up getting together after all.

reply

Btw. didn't they need two wittnesses at wedding, because I saw only one, so it doesn't look like legitimate wedding. And is Las Vegas wedding valid in other US states, because in that case she could probably divorce with him only in LV.

I immediately thought that too. Clooney's character could easily get the marriage annulled. The Coen Brothers thought they were being so ingenius with this film, yet they failed to see such an obvious plot hole.

my grandparents got their marriage annulled after 30 years and 6 kids for anyone who doubts that it can be done.
