Really, what precisely the letters stand for in the acronym is not important as long as one gets the concept of the organization being made up of divorce attorneys. The acronym exists mostly to set up the fantastic pun which appears on the banner behind Miles during his speech: "... let N.O.M.A.N. put asunder." It is the motto of the organization, spoofing the line which concludes traditional wedding vows: "Now, what God has joined together, let no man put asunder."
I don't know if it is just my sense of humor, but I laughed out loud at that poster.

Thanks for posting that. I hadn't relized the irony of the acronym until now. Leave it to the Coens.

The banner was priceless.

I laughed about the banner
also-knowing that it's used
as part of the traditional
wedding vows.

I cracked up, too. Very witty stuff by the Coen bros. Don't understand why some many posters here are down on this film. I thought it was hilarious and effective from end-to-end. Excellent casting, and great performances across the board.

Simply put, they're idiots who didn't get it.
