Is the Widescreen DVD rare or something?

I remember a while back when i was looking for this DVD all the DVDs I saw kept saying "FullScreen" i passed on that. Then a few weeks later i found a DVD that had Widescreen on one side and Fullscreen on the other. All this time i have yet to find that same release again.

I nabbed the flip-disc version a couple years back, but you're right, it seems the fullscreen edition is the only one places stock... For some unknown reason even though I own the movie I still look at the box every once in a while when I see it at a store...

Mistakes were made...

I got the flip disc when it first came out tears ago. I wish I could find another widescreen copy, mine is worn out, it stops working after about half way through and I have to finish it in fullscreen.

From watching downloaded fullscreen and widescreen the movie seems to gain more from fullscreen. By that I mean the Widescreen cuts off the top and bottom more than the fullscreen cuts off the sides. Obviously if you have a widescreen TV then you are going to want a widescreen release. But atleast the fullscreen isn't a pan&scan disaster where you feel like you are constantly watching a zoomed in, almost claustrophobic version of the widescreen.

I used to know the Widescreen DVD back in 2000 but i sold it a long time ago to friends. Usually i go for the Widescreen edition but since the movie was shot in 1.85:1 format. Full Screen version didn`t bugged me that much, although the directed used of the "zooms" were a bit too much at times.

The widescreen version indeed cuts parts of the frame. I'd go for the fullscreen version (even though it's not the intended ratio), because it shows more of Alba's ass in the end.

Aspect ratio

1.37 : 1 (negative ratio)
1.85 : 1 (intended ratio)

That would be a plus aswell, yes. :)

A few years ago, Sony/Columbia/Tri-Star released some of their lesser known flicks, or some more modern films that bombed at the box office like this and "The Cable Guy" on fullscreen only BUDGET DVDs in attempt to pass off actually putting effort into the titles again, and to give the flicks a "faithful home" in Wal-Mart's bargain bin.

As for those saying you see more of the film's frame in "fullscreen", well, yes you do. The film was shot in 1.37:1 (aka "full frame"), and matted to the standard 1.85:1 ratio theatrically. Still, 1.85 is the director's intended ratio, and this is the mere reason why I am still trying to find a flip disc DVD version..but the search isn't going too well.

I have the flipper...and just re-watched it yesterday. I also discovered its "Anamorphic"...so the bars are eliminated on widescreen TVs...which is NOT advertised on the DVD & is a nice bonus.

Glad I held on to mine...of course I did pay well over $14 for it back then.

The FS version isn't as bad as others, but if you're interested, this site has the 16x9 WS version for sale...

Second movie down. Sometimes they don't have copies for a while, but they'll restock them again eventually...but yeah, some people are sticklers for WS versions, so there ya go...

THIS SUCKS. I USED TO OWN THE ORIGINAL VERSION WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT. I PURCHASED IT USED FROM A VIDEO STORE. AFTER A FEW YEARS I BOUGHT IT AGAIN BECAUSE IT WAS ONLY LIKE $6 AT BEST BUY. AND THE VERSION I HAD WAS ALL SCRATCHED UP FROM BEING A RENTAL DISC, EVEN THOUGH IT STILL PLAYED. I SOLD IT AND NOW WHEN I WENT TO WATCH MY NEW COPY FOR THE FIRST TIME I NOTICED IT SAID FULLSCREEN WHICH BROUGHT ME HERE. NOW I WILL HAVE TO ALSO BE ON THE LOOK OUT FOR THE WIDESCREEN VERSION. OF COURSE THOUGH I WILL HAVE TO FIND IT USED CAUSE IT APPEARS THEN THEY NO LONGER MANUFACTURE THAT VERSION.

I suppose the full screen version would be beneficial if you have a large widescreen TV. Set the display setting to full (or stretch) and watch Alba's ass expand!

Here are more films that went full screen only...

"Cruel Intentions 2"
"Jawbreaker"
"The Deep"
"The Forsaken"
"The Thirteenth Floor"
"Whatever It Takes"

(A similar thing happened to "Starship Troopers", you can not buy the two disc special edition at stores, just the single. I think it has commentary and trailer.)

This is what I think happened... The studio decides to re-release those titles as a non-flipper. The above (and previous mentioned "The Cable Guy") were widescreen and full screen. So they re-press the discs - side A. What is side A? Full screen. They may have done this first before printing the wraparound, it's now a full screen release. The messed up part is that the UPC numbers are the same. *shakes angry fist*

I had such a hard time getting "Whatever It Takes" on widescreen. Sellers on Ebay were going off the UPC. Ticked me off. Must have bought it four time over till I got right.

Anyhow, I bought my copy ("Idle Hands"), back in the day at Circuit City. They had both releases. I only saw one copy of the duo presentation, thought it would be wise to pick it up. I think I paid ten dollars for it, glad I did.

So yeah, the widescreen is indeed rare, out of print.

The trivia section reads...

The United States DVD claims to include supplementary production notes, but there are none on the disc or printed inside the cover.

I don't have the thing in front of me, but I believe the original release came with a two page insert with production notes.

You can still get the flip disc quite easily :)
