You'd think that after Dune, studios would know better, but nooooo
I just saw what was probably the worst cut of, this infamously miscut, film: The syndicated TV version.
I had always meant to see this when it came out, but I never did, much to my regret. My primary reason was Spader. He, despite a preference for genres other than sci-fi, is one of the BEST sci-fi actors ever. He comes across as the thinking man mixed with the toughguy. Like Goldblum with a pinch of Chuck Norris. Goldblum could never have pulled that off. :)
Although he's had numerous opportunities before, this really could have been "the" vehicle to boost Spader into bigger leading roles. If not for the kind of meddling you'd expect from DeLaurentis on that other infamous "could've been" film, this would've been a blockbuster. Sphere, Event Horizon and even Solaris pale in comparison to what seeps through the awful editing. Knowing this can really make Supernova frustrating to watch.
It's too bad his current role in Boston Legal, which I love, doesn't allow him to flex his muscles in this kind of role again.
I'll definitely be buying the DVD when I see it. Hopefully a re-edit that brings us something close to a directors cut will also be available one day.
