Seriously, Danika and Yerzy are trying to have a child together, and then Karl shows up and takes about ten seconds to talk her into getting it on in the zero gravity room. The movie totally cared more about throwing it yet another gratuitous sex scene than it did about character consistency or having a plot that made sense, for that matter. Peter Facinelli is the best-looking guy in the movie, though.

I think the point was that Karl had weird, hypnotic powers. I mean, he managed to reattach a severed arm for goodness sake! He was not average.
