Built-in Sequel

The shockwave is supposed to reach Earth in 51 years. By that time, Nick and Kayla's child will be 50 years old, and probably have enough experience that she will be put in command of the mission that deflects, dissipates, or otherwise tries to neutralize the shockwave so that Earth will be saved. A built-in sequel. And since so much time will have passed, they can save money by not hiring the same stars. They can do it any time they want... provided they have enough guts to make a sequel to this movie! But there is a core of fans -- soft-core, apparently -- that would see it, even if it goes straight to video.

How about Persia White as the now-grown Bassett/Spader daughter commanding the mission?

The film did very poorly at the box office and on home video. It's unlikely that unless that audience increases substanially there would be a reason to do it.

Which is a damn shame since I thought it was a very unique story. It seems that Hollywood or people aren't ready for random space adventures that aren't franchised, or franchisable.

Or maybe Karl did'nt get blown out into space with the Alien device & somehow survives clinging on to the ship through the space jump .... Apparently there were alot of re writes during filming because my understanding is that it is a Domesday weapon controlled by higher beings to eradicate sh itty civilisations and reseed life to start again , but poor continuity leads us to believe it is going to wipe out the universe... That does'nt make sense , a Galaxy or even just a Solar System would make more sense for such a Weapon , hence it controlling Karl to take it back to Earth when the Captain wanted to dump it in open space - see what i mean ? The writing is scr ewed up . Just watched it , really not a bad film apart from that .

That which does not Kill me makes me Stranger . . .

I watched the film last night since I saw it in the cinemas and I had the same exact thoughts when the credits came. I then watched the deleted scenes with the alternate ending and saw how Karl came back and was "killed" due to not being in the jump pod when they jumped. The big baby man on the planet (deleted scene) was also an interesting concept. I wonder what the baby would look like. It might be very strong and smart and maybe have an extrasensory connection with the aliens somehow, and could go on a mission to negotiate for a way to end the shockwave and prove the worth of human existence. Or maybe it'll be just a technical science film.

Definitely room for a sequel there, but as some have pointed out, its disappointing box office run made this impossible.
