That alien thingy

It made people super strong, and also gave them the power to regenerate.
Why wouldn't use that for a good thing? Maybe return to earth and help people?
Why did the bad guy use his powers for evil?

Because he was being controlled by the Device - it wanted him to take it back to Earth , the Captain wanted to dump it in open space out of harms way . It is a Domesday weapon controlled by higher beings to eradicate sh itty civilisations and reseed life to start again . Just watched it , really not a bad film .

Not completely true. If you pay attention than you can hear how Karl was an abusive husband/boyfriend thing with the medical officer. He loved her in his own twisted way. Some of the stuff he did was because he wanted to be with her. The device unhinged him a lot but the seeds were already there. It just made his psychosis worse.

the medical officer said he was her worst nightmare. its pretty obvious he wasnt a nice guy, already had evil tendancies. then, he said himself that when they found the object the crew started fighting. im sure it was the artifact that caused the fighting, and the doubts among the crew. i dont think it fully controls, only makes you act on your inner most desires more fully. so he killed them all. we dont know from watching the movie how long he was on the moon alone. a few years most likely. he mutated and learned how to use his new abilities. lou diamond philips and his few hours of mutating were obviously no match for how far along karl was.

the device was designed to destroy any civilization that got advanced enough to find it. it was a way for its creaters to always stay at the top of the evolutionary circle of life. but at the same time, they didnt want to simply destroy everything. so the device will also plant new life, to allow it to again evolve and potentially find the artifact. maybe the species was selfish and arrogant, or maybe they felt that only a race truely deserving of living alongside them would be able to resist or destory the device. we dont know from the movie.

but what we do know is the thing wasnt designed to bring back to your home planet to help advance your species, and use for the good of man kind. if they had brought it back, it would have destroyed earth.

and i accually liked the movie too. it wasnt too bad, just developed things a little too quickly.

another thing i want to point out that i dont see anywhere on the boards, did anyone notice the ships trail at the end? after the ship jumps, it shows a shot from behind. you can see a glowing sort of trail, looks exactly like the effects used when karl was healing or reattaching his arm. i personally think part of the suprnova traveled with them when they jumped. it did explode at the exact second they jumped. maybe just enough to evolve life to the next level when they do reach earth. could have been a built in sequel idea that didnt work out since the movie was a flop.

also, i keep seeing everyone commenting on the fact that they thought it was a plot hole or something since the explotion was so large that its blast would continue all the way back to earth in 51 years. that they think it was to large of a blast so it ruined continuity or something. but they clearly detailed the blue giant star when they jumped, as having at least 10 times the mass of our sun. and showed it many times. then when the artifact exploded, the showed it destroying the sun with it. i think the reason why the blast radius might have been so large was due to the sun exploding with it amplifying the magnitude of it. just a thought.

i know i wrote a lot, but just saw the movie for the first time. i think it was much better than its ratig here and what people say about it. they should have made it a little longer and developed things more, but it was a good and well told story.

I think i said on another board that a possible sequel could have Karl clinging on to the outside of the spaceship when i jumps - and surviving ! May be that's what the glowing was .

clowns.. that same glowing from the ship was in at the beginning of the film, its just the ships ion / anti-matter / whatever propulsion trail...

perhaps its no so apparent in 480, but I just got done watching the HD version and the colors in the trail of the ship were at least 3 or more (green, purple and yellowish). The alien device light effects were only those 2 bright ones: magenta/pink and blue, as was visible with the device itself.
