This movie took a lot of ideas from a lot of sources that were around before John Saul ever got published. Most notably, The Stepford Wives, which was published in 1972, adapted to film in 1975. Saul's first work to be published was in 1977. There's also Invasion of the Body Snatchers, from 1956.
