Mary Jo... Kopechne?

I can't believe I just realized this recently, after first seeing this movie ten years ago. Remember in the early scene, when that couple was making out in the car, and the (extremely cute) girl (actress is named Nastassia Malthe) got her neck snapped by the Blue Ribbon psycho guy?

Well, the character was called Mary Jo Copeland. Probably a lot of fans of this movie are a little young to remember this, but in July, 1969, a young woman called Mary Jo Kopechne was killed in a car accident when she was driving with Senator Ted Kennedy. Kennedy walked away from the crash scene, and Mary Jo died. Some people thought she could have lived if he had tried harder to save her.

If the Kennedies weren't the ultimate Blue Ribbon poster boys, who was?!?!?

Considering the nature of this movie, I feel obliged to also mention that I went to the same high school as Ted Kennedy (many years after he was there). I don't remember a formal Blue Ribbon society, but the whole school was basically one giant Blue Ribbon society.
