the dead brother... good or evil?

whenever Steve remembered his brother, it looked like the brother was bascially torturing him. But when he talked about him, he would say that the brother would have been something really special if he had lived.

Did I miss something? I always figured they were just trying to do a little character development, for Steve, to show that he was complex. But it just made no sense. Maybe they left a few scenes on the cutting room floor?

Any thoughts? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

You are toast, my toasty friend.

I think they did those creepy flashbacks mainly to convey the assumption the older brother was unstable. Maybe the movie could have been better if they had gone with another angle such as the whole Blue Ribbon conspiracy was in Steven's head and he was suffering from the same mental illness as his dead brother. Definitely would have been more interesting but probably too cerebral for a teen movie. Ah well.

I would guess that you are probably right about there being a lot of cut footage considering that they got a pretty recognizable actor (even at that time, I think) in Ethan Embry to play such a trivial/throw-away role. Maybe it's on director commentary (if that even exists for this movie?)
